Following a devastating flood this summer that closed a popular northwest Missouri recreation area for more than two months, the state Department of Natural Resources has announced that Big Lake State Park near Craig has reopened.

Virtually all of the park's 407 acres were flooded when a Missouri River levee gave way June 17 following days of heavy rain. Dozens of nearby homes and cabins were damaged and destroyed, and relief efforts were mounted by both the Red Cross and the Missouri National Guard.

Though cleanup and recovery continues in nearby communities, rebuilding efforts at the park are largely complete. According to DNR, basic and electric camping sites, eight cabins, 10 motel rooms, a convenience store, the playground and boat ramp were all open as of Sept. 1.

Also back in business is the park's rental operation, which provides park patrons with paddleboats, canoes, boats, bicycles and scooters. Lodging facilities at Big Lake will remain open through November...
