Much to their dismay, the Maryville High School boys cross country team will have to wait another week to run their first race of 2010.

Just before the boys race at Tuesday's Maryville Invitational was set to begin, a police officer approached Maryville cross country head coach Phil Stone about the ominous, dark clouds moving overhead.

Stone called the other coaches and Maryville AD Paul Snow together for a meeting, and the group decided to call off the rest of the meet.

“Some officers told me that it probably wasn't a good idea and then my AD,” said Stone. “Then I got congratulated by my superintendent, so it was a smart decision. All the varsity boys were, I'm sure, disappointed. They've been sitting out here for hours and now they're going to go home without racing, but sometimes it's just not worth the risk.”

The varsity girls race got done just ahead of the bad weather.

Maryville's lone participant, sophomore Sydney Rogers, finished ninth out of 37 runners with a time of 24:27.
