Just as Tammy Eiberger was starting to gain a little separation for the MIAA goal scoring title, fellow transfer teammate Tori Von Mende caught right up to her.

Von Mende scored twice in a four-minute span of the first half Tuesday, tying Eiberger for the conference lead, and the Bearcats held off a late charge by Emporia State to win 2-1 at the Bearcat Pitch.

Von Mende tallied her first goal in the the 29th minute with an assist from Emilee Davision. In the 32nd minute, she scored again on set-ups by Amanda Bundrant and Eiberger.

Von Mende and Eiberger each have eight goals on the season and have tied the program's single-season goal scoring record.

The next one to score will hold it, but only momentarily.

Northwest Missouri State head coach Tracy Hoza says both are amazing goal scorers but also benefit from playing with a group of attacking midfielders.

"We wear teams down, and it might not just be Tori wearing them down," said Hoza. "Tori and Tammie do a good job of scoring, but it's also the players that have the vision to play the pass into them. They play the pass at the right time. (Emilee) Davision was fantastic today. I mean attacked and attacked and put them under pressure."

With the Bearcats leading 2-0 at the half, Hoza implored her team not to let up in the second half.

They met her challenge for most of the way.

Emporia State broke through in the 84th minute with a goal by Morgan Wheeler.

The Hornets (1-5-4, 0-2) pressed for the equalizer in the final six minutes, but never got off a shot on goal.

"We let that goal go in because we didn't go up and be disciplined and head the ball," said Hoza. "It's just picking on little things, but those little things will make a difference between a team scoring or not. Having a 2-0 lead plays mind games with you, but they held off well at the end, tackled well and handled the ball when they were supposed to."

Northwest got off 20 shots in the match compared to only 11 for Emporia.

Northwest keeper Kelsey Adams was required to make five saves. Emporia's Nikki Schmitz also made five saves.

The Bearcats (5-2-2, 2-0-0) have now won two straight following a 4-0 loss to No. 15 Central Missouri.
