Whenever Maryville and Lawson have gotten together on the gridiron recently, you can count on two things: There is a lot on the line and the final margin of victory will be eight points.
Maryville and Lawson have played three times in the last four years. All three games have either determined a playoff spot or who advances in the playoffs and all three have been decided by eight points.
Lawson won the first two meetings in 2006 and 2007 to keep the Hounds out of the playoffs, but Maryville exacted some revenge last year with a 15-7 win in a second- round playoff game. That victory catapulted Maryville into the quarterfinals, and the Hounds went on to capture their first state championship since 1982.
When Maryville and Lawson meet again tonight at 7 p.m. in Lawson, the ramifications won't be anywhere close to a district championship or second round playoff game, but it's still considered a big game, nonetheless.
For one, there's bragging rights on the line between two of the premier football programs in this part of the state. Maryville, the defending Class 2 state champion, is ranked No. 3 in Class 3.
