8-man football fans are in for a treat this weekend.
The Missouri 8-Man Football Coaches Association will be hosting its third annual Missouri 8-Man Football Senior All-Star Game 7 p.m. Saturday at William Jewell College in Liberty.
The event features 38 of the top 8-man players from across the state, including seven from Nodaway County.
West Nodaway's Matthew Seville and Landon Wood are members of the Red Team. The Blue Team includes Nodaway Holt's Blake Shamberger and Luke Coffelt, West Nodaway's Brent Barnett and Heath Harris and North Nodaway's Coby Cross.
The teams were drafted by the two head coaches, Brian Messer of Mound City and Chuck Borey of Worth County, in a 1-for-1 format, pitting, in some instances, former teammates against each other.
"It makes it pretty even," said Messer. "One of the other rules that makes it better down there is the kids can only play offense or defense in the first half, so everyone gets to play."
Messer will head up the Red Team for the third straight year after leading Mound City to its third consecutive state championship.
He's been on the losing end each of the last two years and is hoping a different approach will lead to better results Saturday.
"The first two years my philosophy on our squad was to have fun and not get anybody hurt," said Messer. "I'm going to try to be a little more prepared, a little more serious about it, but the main thing is to have fun and get to know the other kids down there."
Assisting Messer on the Red sideline will be Dan Collins (Stanberry), Kurt Thacker (Hardin-Central) and Philip Dean (Miami of Amoret).
Borey, the Blue Team head coach, will be assisted by Mike Seifert (North Andrew), Roy Noellsch (Nodaway-Holt) and Andrew Webster (North Nodaway previously of Tarkio).
“This game showcases some of the best 8-man talent Missouri has to offer. It is such a privilege to get to work with some of the players against whom I have coached,” said Borey on the 8-Man Coaches Association Web site. “We are very grateful to the William Jewell College’s coaching staff and administration for the use of their facilities. Two players will receive a scholarship from the 8-Man Football Coaches Association. Everyone has a great time, and we encourage anyone who is a fan of football to attend.”

The two teams will arrive at William Jewell today.
Each team will take part in four, two-hour practice sessions over the first two days, at which time it will be decided whose going to play offense and defense.
The players will be fed three meals a day. During their down time, they'll watch a movie and go bowling together.
Admission to the game is $7 per person. Gates open at 5 p.m.
The game will feature four, 12-minute quarters just like a regular high school game.
The only rule change applies to the defense. No blitzing is allowed.
