For the Northwest Missouri State women's cross country team, a third place finish at the MIAA Championships last weekend was considered a mild surprise.
For the men to also finish third was considered a huge surprise.
To have two of the top three finishers in each race on top of that made it an extremely successful weekend for the Bearcats in Hays, Kan.
Both team finishes were improvements upon last year when the men finished sixth and the women were fourth. It was the best team finish for the men since 2005 and the best for the women since 1997.
"The men went into it and said ‘well nobody even thinks about us or thinks we have a shot at anything,’ and they've been on the verge of that," said Northwest Missouri State head cross country coach Scott Lorek. "It was just a question of whether we could put it all together on the same day, and quite honestly, it was the first day they did with all of them having good days. The women were actually shooting for second, but still finished higher than last year. So I think we're definitely encouraged because we know what we have to fix."
