Northwest Missouri State’s transfer scoring tandem of Tori Von Mende and Tammy Eiberger made sure another outstanding defensive effort amounted to more than just a draw.
Second half goals by Von Mende and Eiberger gave Northwest the necessary firepower for a 2-0 win over Southwest Baptist Saturday in the MIAA opener for both teams at Bearcat Pitch.
Eiberger and Von Mende have now combined for 11 of the team's 14 goals. This was the third time in six matches when one or both has done all of the scoring.
"They're great workers defensively," said Northwest Missouri State head coach Tracy Hoza. "And then they both want to score. They'll do anything to score. They're natural goal scorers."
Von Mende's goal in the 51st minute was her fifth of the year and broke a scoreless tie.
She took a feed from out front, turned to her right, and a lofted a shot that settled into the top right corner of the net just out of the reach of SBU goalkeeper Megan Link.
It was the first goal by Northwest in over 160 minutes of action.
"Tori is a nifty player, and she's got a little bit of pizzazz to her," said Hoza. "She can turn and move and just do the simple little things. She doesn't take hard shots or anything. She just looks up to see where the goalie is and aims for that and gets it in.”
Eiberger was right on the doorstep to score her sixth goal of the year in the 71st minute when a shot deflected off Link.
That pretty much killed any hopes SBU had at forcing overtime in the last 19 minutes.
Northwest (3-1-2) controlled the action in the second half, outshooting SBU 15-3. The Purple Bearcats held a 14-9 edge in shots in the first half.
Bearcat keeper Kelsey Adams made nine saves for the second straight match to record her second straight shutout of the year.
"The whole team is defending and then Kelsey has earned the last two," said Hoza. "You look at the stats, she's had a lot of shots on her. It's not like there aren't a lot of shots going in. She's earning those shutouts."
Link made 13 saves for the Purple Bearcats who fell to 1-4-1 overall and 0-1 in the MIAA.
Northwest now owns a win over the team picked to finish third in the league and a draw against the team picked second.
The preseason favorite Central Missouri visits Bearcat Pitch Thursday.
"They're defending very well and they're showing up when we need it," said Hoza. "Every game that goes on they do better. We're looking forward to playing Central here Thursday. We just have to keep this momentum going."
