At first, there were tears.
The Northwest women's tennis team was understandably hurt and saddened by losing in the MIAA Tournament finals to Southwest Baptist 5-2 Saturday at the Plaza Tennis Center.
But soon after the tears dried up, the Bearcats were all smiles.
They quickly realized that just getting to the finals was a pretty nice accomplishment.
After all, the Bearcats were the fourth-seeded team in the field.
"They really over-achieved," said Northwest head coach Mark Rosewell.
Northwest's path to an unlikely finals berth began Friday morning with a 5-0 win over fifth-seeded Nebraska-Omaha at Hilltop Tennis Center.
That night, the Bearcats beat top-seeded Washburn for the second time this year in a 5-4 nail-biter at the Plaza Tennis Center.
"We just came out here and said we're going to give it our all," said Northwest senior Sureena Weir.
Playing in their fourth straight tournament final, the Bearcats got off to a good start, winning two of the three doubles matches.
But in singles, Southwest Baptist quickly took control.
