Helen Russell Snodderley, 98, died July 8, 2008 at Wheat Ridge, Colo. She was born June 4, 1910 near Elmo, Mo. Her parents were Joseph L. and Nellie E. (Yaple) Russell.
She lived on a farm most of her life, attended White Chapel Country School and Elmo High School.
She married Earl Snodderley Sept. 29, 1928 at Clarinda, Iowa. They lived on the Snodderley farm most of their married life, with the exception of three years when Earl worked on road construction in Iowa and Nebraska.
In 1951 they both got jobs in Clarinda: Earl working at Lisle Manufacturing Company until his retirement and Helen working for Parris Manufacturing Company, Berry’s Seed Company, also different restaurants in Braddyville and Clearmont. She was a cook at Clearmont Elementary School for 10 years until her retirement.
She and Earl did lots of traveling, going to Alaska twice and visited most of the 48 states, enjoying the sights and visiting relatives and friends. In 1979 they bought an RV trailer and started to spend the winters in Texas. Earl passed away in 1987 and Helen continued to spend winters there.
She moved from the farm in 1994 and lived for six years in her brother’s basement apartment in Clarinda; then moved to Clearmont Housing Complex, enjoying being with old friends and neighbors.
Helen joined the Braddyville Methodist Church at an early age, baptized in the Nodaway River near Braddyville Depot. In 1955 she transferred her membership to the Braddyville Christian Church. She was active with duties there as President of Ladies C.W.F. for many years.
She is preceded in death by husband, Earl; her parents, Joe and Nellie Russell; daughter-in-law Vera Mae Snodderley; sons-in-law Kenneth Griffey and Robert McAfee; and granddaughter, Sherry Rae Stanley; four brothers, Raymond, Galen, Emmett and Lee Russell and three sisters, Marjorie Gear, Mary Ethel Kenning, Lola Jean Burns; brother-in-law Arthur Kenning; sisters-in-law Ella Russell and Jennie Russell.
Helen is survived by her children: Doris Spicer of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Wayne Snodderley and wife Mary of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Phyllis McAfee of Lakewood, Colo.; eight grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 30 great-great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law Ray Burns of Roseville, Mich.; sister-in-law Betty Russell of Corning, Iowa; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 12, 2008 at Braddyville Christian Church with Pastor Terry Major. Interment was at Braddyville Cemetery, Braddyville, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to Braddyville Christian Church or donor’s choice. The Tradition of Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, was in charge of arrangements.
