Charles Alton Cromer, 93, Maitland, Mo., passed away at Tiffany Heights Care Center, Mound City, Mo., after a brief illness on July 9, 2008.

He was born June 10, 1915 to Charles Peter and Mary J. (Wallace) Cromer near Forest City, Mo. He was a graduate of the Forest City High School. He was a farmer all of his life, and spent the entire time in Holt County.

He enjoyed reading, playing cards, gardening and raising flowers, and was an active bowler. He continued to bowl up until shortly before his death. He bowled with the Senior League in Savannah, Mo.

He belonged to the Mound City United Methodist Church and the Graham, Mo. Lions Club.

He married Lillian Huntsman on Feb. 14, 1938. They had two daughters, Laura Jo and Shirley. After retirement they spent several winters in Texas.

After the death of his wife Lillian on Sept. 13, 1986, he married Mildred Atkins Adams of Oregon, Mo. on Dec. 7, 1990. She died on June 18, 1997. He was also preceded in death by his only brother, Fred Cromer.

He is survived by his children, Laura Jo and Clenell Prettyman, and Shirley and Glenn Barnett; five grandchildren, Diana and Greg Frueh, Hopkins, Mo., Sue and Mark McIntosh, Graham, Mo., Darla and Thomas Jung, Ann and Rich Aubrey, St. Joseph, Mo., Chris and Jennifer Prettyman, Barnard, Mo.; nine great-grandchildren, Matthew Eis, Christopher and Jada Jung, Sara and Samantha Frueh, Brady McIntosh and Brett, Caleb and Jaci Prettyman. Also surviving are his two sisters, Frances Noland, Mound City, Mo., and Wilma Albertson, Smithville, Mo.; cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

Services: Saturday, July 12, 2008, 10:30 a.m. at the Chamberlain Funeral Home in Mound City. Interment: Benton Cemetery. Family visitation: Friday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Memorials: Tri-City Nutrition Site in Maitland, or Kendallwood Hospice in St. Joseph, Mo.
