In a world where information is at our fingertips almost instantly, why should the world of geographic information systems (GIS) be any different?
According to the Midland GIS Solutions Web site, digital data contained within a GIS is quickly becoming a primary mapping and analysis instrument in business, government, education and other areas. This data includes land assessment, land survey research, economic development, land planning and development.
Wednesday was National GIS Day, and while the company didn't necessarily do anything special in celebration, it is nice for people to know those kinds of services exist.
Midland GIS Solutions can provide the necessary tools needed to manage and accurately collect GIS data to increase efficiency in maintenance, work flow and overall productivity.
Katie Shepherd, marketing director for Midland GIS Solutions in Maryville, said their company has performed GIS work in more than 30 counties in Missouri. Midland was recently awarded a project with the city of Maryville, and has done extensive work for both Northwest Missouri State University and Nodaway County.
Northwest now has all of their utilities mapped through a GIS system, and staff trained to deal with those utilities, so they can do all of their needed work in house.
Kirk Larson, operation's manager of Midland GIS, said it's always nice for an entity to be able to rely on a quick response as far as knowing where specifically they need to be looking — something that is quick when it has already been mapped with a GIS system. And of course, it doesn't hurt either, that because they already have all of that information, it ultimately saves an unmeasurable cost for the business.
Larson said the best part about his job is the fact that it is fun and the technologies they use make it a cool job to have.
County projects include mapping of all of their land parcels and what the company calls a full cadastral mapping, as well as doing work on mapping verification for the 911 address system.
Shepherd said the company has also performed services in Buchanan County, which included locating approximately 9,000 manholes.
GIS technologies are popular among municipal infrastructures because public works departments utilize GIS to administer and manage all city improvements and maintenance to increase efficiency and improve resource management. Public works data can be displayed in digital or paper format and has various applications such as pavement management, solid waste management, traffic and transportation management, solid waste management, traffic and transportation management, street and sidewalk condition and water and sewer maintenance, among others.
Midland Surveying and Midland GIS have approximately 40 professional land surveyors, GIS specialists, CAD technicians and support staff and can provide cadastral and boundary surveys, topographic and engineering design surveys, utility location surveys, route surveys and construction layout surveys.
Midland GIS Solutions received the 2008 ESRI Worldwide Business Partner of the Year Award.
