The Downtown Sounds Summer Concert Series kicked off Friday evening on the east side of the square under clear skies and the shade of the Nodaway County Courthouse.

The Gypsy Hippies were the main attraction, but music lovers also flooded Market Street with lawn chairs, classic cars and motorcycles. And at least for one fan, the event hit all of the right notes.

"The weather is perfect," Maryville resident Lindsey Hill said. "I think they (Gypsy Hippies) sound really good.

"It's nice to be able to have something like this to do."

Another onlooker was Wes Wooten. He brought his '03 Honda Shadow to park amongst the other bikes while enjoying a favorite genre of his.

"Old classics," Wooten said. "They're playing good music. You can't beat that."

The Gypsy Hippies — Tony Sly on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, Jeremy Dorrel on lead guitar and vocals, Chris Weinzerl on the drums and Cory O'Riley on bass — were the first act in the three-part Downtown Sounds Summer Concert Series put on by the Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce.

The Maryville Host Lions also provided a food stand to add to the night's festivities.

The next event will start at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 31 in downtown Maryville. Vandelsnook is the feature act for that night.

The final event in the Downtown Sounds Summer Concert Series is a Blues and Barbecue themed event set for 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11.
