His future seemed bright with the world was at his fingertips.

Despite all the good things, John Kevin Hines took a step off the Golden Gate Bridge intending to end his life.

This week –– Sept. 5-7 –– is National Suicide Prevention Week.

In response to the effort to support suicide prevention, the Wellness Center at Northwest Missouri State University is sponsoring John Kevin Hines who will share his story at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, in Charles Johnson Theater.

Hines was a normal high school student –– loved performing in plays, was active in sports and enjoyed being around people. At age 17, Hines was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He struggled to find a treatment.

In 2000, during his freshman year of college, Hines attempted to take his life. He jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge. He was lucky to be one of 29 people to survive that jump.

Since that experience, Hines has learned to deal with mental illness in a healthy way and now serves as an advocate and role model for hundreds of thousands of young people who are dealing with all types of mental health issues.

He tells his story using his compassion to discuss bipolar disorder, depression, suicide and survival.

Hines is devoted to living every day grounded to the things he loves. This message comes out in his presentations.

During the past five years, Hines has spoken to more than 150,000 people about his experience. He has reached millions in media interviews and appearances.

Hines was featured in the film "The Bridge" and has appeared in People, Time and Newsweek magazines. He has shared his story on Larry King Live, Prime Time, 20/20 and many other national new programs.

Kevin's most recent project is working with the Bridge Rail Foundation to raise the rail on the Golden Gate Bridge in hopes of preventing suicides.

Hines' visit is made possible through a Campus Suicide Prevention Grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). This is a grant that is in the third and final year of implementation.
