Temperatures in Maryville reached into the high 90s this week, and forecasters predict more hot weather going into the weekend.

Many residents headed for the Maryville Aquatic Center adjoining Beal Park. Others stayed inside with the air conditioning turned up.

For those who have to be outside in the heat or in a building without A/C, the Nodaway County Health Center has some tips for staying safe and cool as temperatures approach triple digits.

First and foremost, center staff stress the importance of being aware of the warning signs of heat-related illness, such as light-headedness, mild nausea, confusion, sleepiness or profuse sweating.

If you must work outdoors, try to schedule activity before noon or in the evening. Those without air conditioning at home may need to seek short-term relief at shopping malls, libraries, movie theaters and supermarkets.

The Nodaway County Senior Center acts as a "cooling center" for seniors and other people especially susceptible to health problems related to high temperatures.

It is also important to increase fluid intake on hot days. Water is best. Avoid drinks with caffeine, alcohol or large amounts of sugar because such beverages actually cause fluid loss. Don't wait until you feel thirsty to drink, and take fluid at regular intervals during the day.
Among those at greatest risk of heat-related illness are children and people over age 65.

Because of the increased risk for children, day-care centers and schools should take extra precautions, and children should never be left unattended, especially in cars, even if the air conditioner is running.

"We have a chart given to us by the state, and if the heat index is too high we don't let the kids outside," said Kristi Davis of the Learning Tree Children's Center. "Aside from that, we just provide them with lots of water and sunscreen."
