Members of the Maryville Garden Club want to help residents make their beds –– flower beds, that is.
The 30-member group will hold their annual Iris Sale from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at the Mary Mart Shopping Center.
George Null, chairman of the iris sale for the past four years, looks forward to the event as a chance to get people interested in gardening while raising funds for the club's community projects.
“Our plant sales really are partly a community service,” Null said.
The club maintains Mozingo Point Garden, donates books to the Maryville Public Library’s gardening section, runs a youth gardening program, and plants memorial trees for deceased members. Volunteers are also working in conjunction with the American Legion to place a Blue Star memorial at Mabel Perkins Memorial Garden, Null said.
The memorial marker program, started in 1945 by the National Garden Clubs, Inc., honors men and women serving in the armed forces.
Without the annual iris sale and spring plant sale, the not-for- profit volunteer organization would not be able to undertake all of these initiatives.
This year the sale will also include day lilies. All of the flowers are locally grown by members of the club.
When it comes to selling iris, everyone wins, Null said.
“They have to be dug up every three to four years, they get crowded,” he said. “Since they multiply you have more iris than you can keep.”
