Teams are forming, plans are being made and money is being raised for the 12th annual Relay for Life of Nodaway County event, which is Saturday, Sept. 19, and Sunday, Sept. 20.
Brenda Neff, team captain for the Consumers Oil Company Relay for Life team said they have planned a scrapbooking event with all proceeds benefitting Relay for Life.
All scrapbookers are invited to pack up their photos, paper, scissors and glue and meet at the Nodaway County Senior Center at 5:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 21, and 8 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 22, for a weekend of memory making.
The cost for a weekend of scrapbooking is $50, which includes snacks for Friday evening and lunch and dinner on Saturday.
There will be several instructor-led projects throughout the event and a silent auction of scrapbook supplies.
For more information or to register for the event call Consumers Oil Company at (660) 582-2106 or Brenda Neff at (660) 562-9815.
This is the fifth year Consumers Oil Co. has had a Relay for Life team. Neff said when a fellow employee was diagnosed with cancer, they decided to form a team to benefit not only their co-worker, but also to donate to the American Cancer Society and their efforts to cure cancer.
“I think everyone has been touched by cancer,” Neff said. “For me, I lost my grandpa from lung cancer, had another set of grandparents win their battles and have had many other people in my life fight against cancer. Raising money and awareness through Relay for Life is the least I can do to help the American Cancer Society.”
Through the five years of being active in the Relay for Life cause, the Consumers Oil Company team has had a variety of fund raisers. Last year they put toilets on lawns with the message “Flush out Cancer.” When a toilet was placed on a lawn, the home owner would pay to have it moved to another location. Neff said that fundraiser worked well; however the toilets were heavy and the project turned into a lot of work.
This year the team is “Kicking out Cancer” with small donkeys. The donkeys are placed on lawns.
Anyone interested in placing a donkey on a lawn, call Consumers Oil Company or Brenda Neff.
On the night of the Relay for Life event Neff said they will be smoking pork loins to sell throughout the evening and they will be serving biscuits and gravy and pancakes on Sunday morning.
