Maryville's downtown square will be transformed into a rock and roll arena this weekend.
At 7 p.m. on Friday, July 25, the second installment of the Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce's "Downtown Sounds" summer concert series will present Holton, Kansas' True North.
Last month saw a performance by the Dixie Cadillacs of Kansas City for the first iteration of "Downtown Sounds." Suzanne Von Behren, Membership Services Coordinator for the chamber, said that performance attracted concertgoers from Atchison, Kan., Kansas to Omaha, Nebraska and a lot of points between.
"We were excited with that turnout," Von Behren said of the roughly 300-person crowd, "and we're looking forward to an even bigger turnout for this Friday's concert."
True North, an alternative country/roots rock band, regularly performs across the four-state area.
The three hour concert is more than just a fun way to spend Friday night, said Von Behren, it's also good for the community and area businesses.
"These events bring people and money to our area," she said, "and they wouldn't be possible without our sponsors and volunteers."
Those sponsors include St. Francis Hospital & Health Services, 97.1 the 'Vill, Maryville License Bureau, Citizens Bank & Trust, Maryville Hy-Vee, Nodaway Valley Bank, Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce, and Burny's Sports Bar.
Market Street, between Third and Fourth streets will close at 5 p.m. Friday in preparation for the event.
Light refreshments will be available.
In case of inclement weather, the concert will be cancelled.
"We invite people to bring their lawn chairs and blankets," Von Behren said. "Just come out and enjoy the free music and have a good time."
