As part of the annual Nodaway County Fair, this year's parade theme goes to the four-legged canines at the New Nodaway Humane Society.
The parade, which is set to take place Saturday, July 16, comes with a theme of Dog Days of Summer to help raise awareness for the dogs of the city's animal shelter.
"I'm glad they decided to make the parade theme focus on the animals," shelter manager Cindy Nelson said.
Located on South Depot Street, the animal shelter is currently home to approximately 70 dogs and 100 cats in need of adoption.
"Hopefully with the help of the parade theme, some of the animals will find a home very soon," Nelson said. "Animals who are less fortunate to find an owner will benefit from the generous donations."
While parade registration is free, participants are encouraged to make a $10 donation to the animal shelter. Those who do will receive a portable, dog water bowl as a gift for their donation.
Humane society staff and volunteers will enter a float which will carry a few of their adoptable dogs, while others walk along side.
The parade route will proceed east on Fourth Street from the southwest corner of the Northwest Missouri State University campus. When it reaches Buchanan Street, the procession will turn south and continue to Second Street, where the parade will conclude.
Aside from the parade, shelter staff and board members will host an adoption booth during the fair on Saturday. Dogs at the booth can be adopted for $40 while cats will be available for $30 — half the usual cost.
"Animals can be adopted for half price on Saturday with all vaccinations included," Nelson said. "Coupons will be granted Saturday at the booth to those who are interested in adopting, this will enable them to visit the shelter at a later date to complete the necessary steps for the adoption process."
