Less than a month since the campaign began, and almost 30 percent of the overall United Way in Nodaway County has already been reached.
However, it's a long road ahead with many agencies in need of support.
Since the annual kick-off breakfast on Sept. 9, more than $27,000 has been raised for United Way in Nodaway County –– that is 27 percent of the goal set for 2008-2009.
Sandy White, secretary/treasurer for the organization, said the goal for this year is $100,000 –– up from last year's $90,000 goal.
"Our goal is raised this year so we can better serve the agencies we help fund," White said.
United Way of Nodaway County will be hosting fundraisers throughout the year. Some of the fundraisers to watch for are:
• "Dine Out for United Way" –– Sunday, Oct. 5, through Saturday, Oct. 25. Area restaurants will donate a percentage of their profits for one day to United Way of Nodaway County. (More will be announced about this event later.)
• The third annual baked potato bar is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Nodaway County Senior Center, 1210 East First, Maryville. Tickets are $5 and will be available from United Way Board members and agencies two weeks in advance, or at the door the night of the event.
• Spa Certificates –– Once again, beginning in October, Spa Certificates will be available for purchase from Board members and agencies. A $40 donation will "buy" a 60-minute in-home experience ($35 of the donation goes to United Way) and $25 will buy a 30-minute experience.
United Way of Nodaway County has a new web site where additional information can be obtained or donations made. The Web site is www.nodawayunitedway.com.
Nodaway County's Pacesetter organization this year is Northwest Missouri State University. They have raised more than $11,000 so far –– their goal is $14,00.
"We are very proud and excited to have Northwest Missouri State University leading the way in Nodaway County this year," White said.
United Way of Nodaway County raises money for 16 area agencies which serve children, the needy and the elderly of Nodaway County.
"The agencies we serve are chosen based on need and use of funds," White said. "They are chosen by a committee of volunteers from Nodaway County. Nearly all –– 99 percent –– of the money raised in Nodaway County stays in Nodaway County." White said.
Agencies served are: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nodaway County, Pony Express Council Boy Scouts, Children's Mercy Hospital, Children and Family Center, Family Guidance Center, Nodaway County 4-H Council, Girl Scouts of NE Kansas and NW Missouri, Health Emergency Lifeline Program, NW Missouri Literacy Council, The MInistry Center, Nodaway County Community Building, Nodaway County Recreation and Education for Individuals with Disabilities, The Salvation Army, School Health Services, Second Harvest Food Bank and Nodaway County Senior Center.
United Way recognizes individuals, businesses and organizations who donate at the $100, $200, $300, $400, $500 and $1,000 levels.
"The United Way of Nodaway County would like to sincerely thank each and every donor, no matter the amount they give," White said. "Their commitment to the community shows that they know how to 'Live United.'"
