Some people search throughout their lifetime to find something they really enjoy doing. Not so with Dorothy McCrorey — although she turned 90 on Monday — she's known for many years that she loves to crochet.

A self-taught user of the crochet hook, McCrorey has made everything from doilies to table cloths and from afghans to baby blankets. Indeed, she has been putting out one piece after another for a very long time.

Her lettered wall hangings are probably the most popular pieces she makes.

McCrorey first heard about the lettered wall hangings when a gentleman approached her and asked if she could make one for his daughter.

"He showed me a photo of a lettered wall hanging and asked if I could make one for his daughter," she said. "At that time, I'd never made one. I went to town, got the thread and a book and learned how to make them. Now I just love making them. I crochet them with very fine thread. Getting started is the hardest part and some of the letters are harder than others."

To date, it is estimated that McCrorey has crocheted more than 120 lettered wall hangings. Some of them are crocheted with family names. Some simply say “welcome...”
