A two-vehicle accident occurred Monday at the intersection of Third and Laura streets involving a 2003 Ford Expedition driven by Brenda Neff, Pickering, and a 2008 Chevrolet HHR driven by Beth Zech, Maryville. Both women were taken to St. Francis Hospital in Maryville for their injuries.

Maryville, Mo. -

Barely more than a month ago, a Pickering mother shared her memories in district court of a horrible accident a year before that emotionally scarred her for life.

Now –– more than a year after the horrific incident –– that same mother was again the victim of a careless driver.

Maryville Public Safety director Keith Wood said Monday that officers and medical staff responded to a vehicle accident at the intersection of Third and Laura streets.

At 9:04 a.m., officers believe a 2008 Chevrolet HHR, driven by Beth Zech, 52, of Maryville, was traveling south on Laura Street when Zech failed to obey a stop sign at the intersection.

Her vehicle then collided with a 2003 Ford Expedition, driven by 31-year-old Brenda Neff of Pickering, while she was driving westbound on Third Street.

“No citations that I know of have been issued,” Wood said Monday. “We also don’t think either of them were traveling at unreasonable speeds.”

Emergency crews had to pry open Zech’s driver’s door to remove her from the vehicle before taking her by ambulance to St. Francis Hospital.

After ambulance crews analyzed Neff, she was also driven to St. Francis.

Neff is the mother of 3-year-old Abrielle Neff who died in a DWI motor vehicle collision in March 2007.

Ryan Sundermann, Maryville, was sentenced in June to serve six years in the Department of Corrections on charges of involuntary manslaughter among other similar traffic offenses related to the case.

He was also ordered to pay more than $3.5 million in restitution.

That wasn’t the only accident that kept rescuers busy, however.

After having responded to a minor accident at 6:33 a.m. at Sixth and Saunders –– almost three hours before the Neff accident –– and then to another one at 9:26 a.m. at First and Market streets, ambulances were then called for a more serious accident on U.S. Highway 71 seven miles south of Maryville.

It was there where a 23-year-old Monroe City resident was life-flighted to Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 23-year-old Matthew Seward was traveling northbound when he went off the roadway, struck a fence, hit an embankment and rolled his 1996 Dodge Avenger several times before coming to a stop on its wheels.

Charges are pending against Seward for reckless driving and for not wearing a seatbelt.

Although it’s not the most recorded number of accidents in a single day, Wood said it is unusual for this many accidents to occur in one morning.

“If this were winter time, I’d attribute this to the weather,” Wood said. “But in this case it’s just kind of a fluke thing.”
