The former Northeast Nodaway R-V Elementary School building in Parnell, closed by the district at the end of the spring 2011 semester, has been sold, according to records in the office of Nodaway County Recorder of Deeds Sandra Smail.
R-V Superintendent Jeff Mehlenbacher confirmed this week that the deal closed on Friday. The buyer is Chester Taylor, a former area resident who reportedly now resides in Arizona.
Mehlenbacher said the purchase price was $30,000, which will be added to the district's capital improvements fund. He said the price met with the district's expectations for sale of the property
A planning group made up of district patrons is now in the process of setting priorities for various improvements envisioned for the Ravenwood school, including a new exterior wall, new gutters and new windows. Projected cost for each of the jobs under consideration exceeds the amount realized from sale of the school building, Mehlenbacher said.
Located at 411 East Allyn Ave., the now-vacant Parnell building is a two-story brick structure built in the early part of the 20th century. Various additions and improvements were added over the decades.
Mehlenbacher said he could not comment on what the new owner is planning to do with the structure and adjoining property, a block-sized lot not far from Parnell's tiny one-street downtown.
Faced with a series of cuts in state appropriations, R-V officials elected to close the school last year in order to save money. The decision meant that about 120 students in pre-school through sixth grade began attending classes this fall at the district's middle school/high school building in Ravenwood a few miles to the south.
The Parnell building was stripped of its equipment and furnishings, and the Ravenwood facility was modified to accommodate the new pupils. Enrollment at what is now the district's sole campus is just over 200 students.
