Maryville residents are being asked to open their hearts and pocketbooks  to individuals and families who lost their homes and belongings this week when a downtown commercial building containing nine residential apartments was destroyed by fire.

An adjoining building containing a tenth apartment was also rendered uninhabitable by the blaze.

Kevin Kirby, executive director of the Midland Empire Chapter of the American Red Cross in St. Joseph, said Thursday that the relief agency is currently accepting donations on behalf of the 15 adults and one child displaced by the fire, which broke out early Wednesday.

Kirby said the chapter needs to raise about $9,000 to provide the survivors with clothing, food, prescription medications and the first month's rent on a new residence.

Pre-addressed envelopes for use by donors will be inserted into Monday's edition of the Maryville Daily Forum.
