I did a little bit of research before going to see "Hellboy 2: The Golden Army" and discovered that the original Hellboy film came out in 2004, and after it’s debut the studio didn’t want to make a sequel because they weren’t confident it was in their best interest. However, Universal Studios didn’t agree and bought the rights to the film and began to create it’s sequel. So, the big question is, who was right? I think that if you like crazy, weird, totally out there monster madness, and a LOT of action in your movies, you’ll enjoy "Hellboy 2".
When the story begins, Prince Nuada (Luke Goss) is found seeking revenge, and looking for the three pieces of a crown that will enable him to control the infamous Golden Army. This Golden Army is constructed of big, ferocious robots and they are seemingly indestructible. So it becomes Hellboy’s (Ron Perlman) job to protect the third piece and stop Nuada from gaining control of anything.
I liked Hellboy; he was kind of like a big loveable guy. Ok, maybe not loveable, I wasn’t really loving all that prosthetic junk on his face, but his character was humorous and charming. Able to walk in hell and on earth both, Hellboy decides to reveal who he is to America. I’m not really sure he thought that one through, because people don’t really view him as charming. In fact, they think he’s just a big, scary monster, and he is not welcomed warmly. I was surprised to find a "don’t judge a book by its cover" moral in this particular film, but I think maybe it slipped in there on accident. I really think Hellboy was just a little misunderstood, I’m sure that if the people of America had chosen not to look at him as a big, scary, red monster he would have been perceived a lot better.
I think maybe "Hellboy 1" was a little misunderstood too. If you liked the original, then you’ll like the sequel. "Hellboy 2: The Golden Army" is just a vamped up version of the original, but it’s really pretty good. Full of really cool action and fantasy, I gave this film three out of five stars.
