Film director Bernard Shakey was angry. He was fed up with the Bush administration and its disregard of human rights, the environment, the deficit … the list goes on.

There are two kinds of people in this world: those that really like the hypnotic, repetitive, beautiful, eerie powerful music of Philip Glass, and those who, upon hearing it, make an unpleasant face, scratch their heads and say, “What the heck is that?”

I expected to like “Be Kind, Rewind,” but not as much as I did — or in quite the same way. The previews promised a zany, trippy comedy starring Jack Black and Mos Def as a couple of video store guys, who when their VHS tapes get erased, create their own versions of “Ghostbusters,” “Rush Hour 2” and other Hollywood hits. But writer/director Michel Gondry, who directed one of the best films of the past decade with 2004’s “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” is aiming at a bigger target than mere laughs.

Brutal honesty can lead to the dark matters found in places most people don't want to go. Not Jesse Lipke. He went to Friday morning's premier of "The Dark Knight" hoping to see a brutally honest Batman. Along the way, Lipke pulled no punches as he talked to columnist Tom Loewy about the dark portions of his own life.

Pure panic can’t accompany the predictable. Even the worst plans in scare-tactic politics — continuing war, rising gas prices, dying dollars — are, unfortunately, practices to be foreseen and accounted for. But what of those crawling from an abyss of unanticipated evil — fueled not by gain or revenge, but ideology and a chaotic interest to prove decent men cannot exist in indecent times?

If you’re excited about “The Dark Knight,” which arrives in theaters Friday, you should check out an earlier Batman movie that not only features The Joker, but also makes room for The Penguin, The Riddler, Catwoman and Robin The Boy Wonder.

She’s the star of her own TV show, had a No. 1 movie at the box office, has been the subject of a pregnancy hoax and had revealing pictures leaked all before the age of 16. Of course I’m talking about Miley Cyrus, the Disney sensation who is releasing her new album, “Breakout,” Tuesday.

Cracker has been described as many things over their lengthy career, everything from “roots-rock” to “traditional-rock,” but as frontman and guitarist David Lowery said, “I really sort of just considered ourselves a rock band.”

Jean is on point. Producer 9th Wonder is, too, bringing a little soul to the proceedings. But while there are some great moments, both lyrically and musically, it doesn't all work together as well as it could.
