Northwest Missouri State University football fans are looking forward to back-to-back weekends of parties, pageantry and on-the-field action this month as the Bearcats take on arch-rivals Pittsburgh State Oct. 19 during the Fall Classic at Arrowhead Stadium, then return to Maryville Oct. 26 for a Homecoming contest against the Missouri Southern State University Lions.
Thousands of fans are expected to make the trip to Kansas City for the annual showdown with the Pitt State Gorillas, and a fair number of them will doubtless turn out for a special Northwest Night Friday, Oct. 18, in the outdoor courtyard of KC Live, located at 14th Street and Grand Boulevard in the downtown Power & Light District.
The free Friday "pep rally" is being sponsored by the Northwest Alumni Association and promoted as a "family-friendly" event that will include appearances by Bobby Bearcat, the Northwest Steppers and cheer squad, and the Bearcat Marching Band. Broadcast personality and Northwest alumnus Steve Serrano will serve as emcee.
In accordance with KC Live policy, anyone under age 21 will be required to leave the venue at 9 p.m.
Saturday's Fall Classic tailgate festivities begin at noon at the Founder's Club at Arrowhead Stadium. The event immediately precedes the football game, which starts at 3 p.m. Fall Classic tickets cost $37 for adults and students at the club level. Cost at the field level is $25 for adults and $10 for students with a valid school ID. Family Pack tickets (two adults and two students) cost $60 and must be purchased in person at Northwest.
To buy tickets, call the Northwest Student Services Center at (660) 562-1212 or go to www.nwmissouri.edu/sports/fantickets.htm. The Northwest ticket office will close at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, and Northwest internet sales will end at 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17. Sales after that will be handled through Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000.
Backpacks are not allowed inside Arrowhead, and fans are encouraged to arrive early in order to complete the screening procedure. For a complete list of items allowed or prohibited inside the stadium, go to www.goarrowhead.com.
Northwest and Pittsburg State have combined to win outright or share the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association title in 21 of the last 24 seasons dating back to 1989.
After battling the Gorillas, the 'Cats will return to Bearcat Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 26, following a week's worth of Homecoming festivities under this year's theme, "Rolling Out the '90s."
Off-field Homecoming highlights will include Saturday's parade in addition to Thursday's student Variety Show, and the White International Plaza flag raising and Golden Years Reunion (class of 1963) on Friday. For a detailed Homecoming schedule, go to www.nwmissouri.edu/campusactivities/homecoming.
The parade will begin at 9 a.m. at the corner of Ray Street and College Avenue and proceed east down Fourth Street to Vine. Once again this year, the area between Colden Pond and the intersection of University Drive and Fourth Street has been designated as a family friendly viewing area.
Page 2 of 2 - More than 100 entries are expected for the 2013 parade, including floats sponsored by both campus and community organizations and local businesses. Parade registration costs $25 for non-profit organizations and $35 for for-profits. Entry deadline is 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14.
