One man was killed and another seriously injured late Sunday in a one-vehicle accident on Highway 46 five miles west of Maryville.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the late Damion J. Smith, 20, Fairfax, was driving a 2007 Ford 500 sedan westbound when he lost control of the wheel on a curve. The car went off the north side of the pavement, causing Smith to overcorrect, which sent the vehicle careening across the oncoming lane before striking a bridge.
The car continued down an embankment and came to rest on its wheels in a ravine.
The patrol report stated that Smith, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:53 p.m. by Nodaway County Coroner Vince Shelby. The body was transported to the Schooler Funeral Home in Fairfax.
Smith's passenger, Jeffery A. Wooten, 21, Fairfax, was taken by ambulance to St. Francis Hospital & Health Services in Maryville. It could not be determined if Wooten was properly restrained at the time of the accident.
Troopers R.P. Dudeck and S.E. Pritzel were assisted in working the accident by the Nodaway County Sheriff's Office, Skidmore Fire & Rescue, Burlington Junction Fire & Rescue and firefighters from Maryville Public Safety.
