Northwest Missouri State University officials confirmed Saturday that a student has died on campus as the result of an apparent suicide.
A university press release identified the student as James Smith, 20, a sophomore psychology major and art minor from Platte City.
Nodaway County Coroner Vincent Shelby said an autopsy was to be performed Sunday in Kansas City. Shelby declined to state a probable cause of death other than to say that Smith apparently took his own life.
Smith's body was discovered about 1:15 p.m. in a bathroom in Tower Suites, a residential complex on the north end of campus.
The release stated that grief counseling would be made available to Northwest students and staff from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday and 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the University Wellness Center.
In addition, a "support gathering" was to take place at 7 p.m. Saturday at The Station, a student lounge and meeting facility.
Members of the university community in need of emotional support outside those hours were asked to call the University Police Department at (660) 562-1254.
