You would have thought that World War Z had begun.
That is what I thought when my smart phone just started blowing up with text messages, news alerts, etc.
I found myself a little weary to pick it up and check what was going on and what could possibly be causing so much activity.
Upon looking, the first text I saw was, “Ben Affleck - Batman, what do you think? Not a fan”!
So all this hub-bub was about Ben Affleck being cast as Batman in the next Man of Steel film.
We don’t have enough going on in this weird world we live in that Ben Affleck being cast as the next Batman is so Earth shattering?
For me, a life-long Batman fanatic, it didn’t even register one complaint.
I was okay with Ben Affleck taking over the role from Christian Bale and I was looking forward to a new take on the classic character.
Then I started reading what was going on in Social Media and I couldn’t really understand why everybody was freaking out.
You would have thought that Health Ledger had been cast as a Joker. I will get to that later.
Meanwhile, back at my computer, I couldn’t believe what I was reading.
Why were people bringing up Daredevil and Gigli now? Those movies were from years ago.
Hadn’t Big Ben done enough in recent years to get back into everybodies good graces?
Why did everyone suddenly forget how he has turned his career around and is making some really great choices?
I don’t know but it left a bad taste in my mouth.
Let’s look at some of the other choices people wanted.
Josh Brolin - Why does Ben not get a pass on Daredevil but everybody else forgets that Mr. Brolin starred in an even worse comic book adaptation, Jonah Hex.
Go watch that one, then Daredevil and report back to me which one you liked better.
Jon Hamm - Well, actually, I would have liked to have seen Jon Hamm as Batman. But dare we forget that he was in the publicly panned film Sucker Punch?
Guy Pearce - Just wouldn’t have fit the part, in my eyes. Although if Daniel Craig can change the standard for James Bond, why not Pearce for Batman? Well, if you can forgive him for the horrible Count of Monte Cristo that is?
Basically, what I am trying to say is, it wouldn’t have mattered who the actor was that was picked to portray Batman. It wasn’t Christian Bale (who we all see, now, as Batman) so it was going to be wrong in someone else’s eyes.
Page 2 of 2 - I, for one, am looking forward to Ben’s performance as Bruce Wayne. I think he will bring more of a swagger back to the multi-billionaire that has been missing for awhile.
Now back to Heath Ledger, may he rest in peace.
When Heath Ledger was cast as the new Joker back in 2008, the response was similar to what Ben just got. (Michael Keaton wasn’t very popular either).
Most people pointed out that he was a good character actor who was in a lot of romantic films and could in no way fill the shoes vacated by Jack Nicholson.
They pointed to Brokeback Mountain and made derogatory remarks about his sexuality.
What we got was an Oscar winning performance from Ledger and, by far, the best Joker I have ever seen.
So, I am on board with Ben. Give him a chance. He may just surprise us all. Ledger did and I think Affleck can too.
