The Lady Spoofhound golfers led by coach Brenda Ricks started practice Monday at Mozingo Lake Golf Course.
With seven members on the team, they are returning three golfers who were part of the state-qualifying team last fall.
Senior Cassie Holtman, junior Hannah Brod and sophomore Mollie Holtman contributed to the sixth place effort at the state competition.
Ricks said she is still unsure who will fill the five varsity spots, but the decision will be made soon. She will have senior Ali Throm, junior Hanna Hall, along with freshmen Anna Swink and Anna Throm to choose from.
"We'll have to see how it goes," Ricks said. "It depends a lot on how they handle the mental part of the game. We have the talent, but it's the mental part."
The Hounds have gone as a team for the last six years, a tradition Ricks thinks they can continue.
"Our goal is always going to state," Ricks said. "This is going to be a building season for sure, there is a lot of talent out here. We may not have big numbers, but we're mighty."
The team lost seniors Megan Scheil and Megan Glass from last year, but Ricks thinks the younger players coming up can easily take on the challenge.
Mollie Holtman is coming off of a shoulder injury this summer, but it has healed and she is close to being back to 100 percent.
Ricks said that the practice, for now, is centered on the short game.
"We are focusing on chipping and putting," Ricks said. "You can be a good golfer, but without the short game, you'll still score high."
The first match is at 4 p.m. on August 28 in Chillicothe. The team will have two more away matches before hosting Lafayette and Bishop LeBlond on September 5.
