The Maryville Optimist Club has been working with sixth-graders at St. gregory's School on a "Pay it Forward" program this spring that will benefit the New Nodaway Humane Society and the Ministry Center food pantry.
Earlier in the school year, club members Lois Terhune and Mary Noel gave each of the 11 students in the class $1, charging them to come up with a way to make those dollars grow in a way that helped others.
In response, the class organized a raffle and will donate both the proceeds and their $1 bills to the pantry and the animal shelter.
Raffle tickets will be sold after all St. Gregory Barbarigo Catholic Church Masses this weekend and are also available from any St. Gregory’s School sixth-grader. Cost is $1 per ticket or six tickets for $5.
"Pay it Forward" is the title of a book written by Catherine Ryan Hyde setting forth the ideal that those who receive help are obligated to help others.
