Fred Mares, a popular local entertainer known to many as the pun-spinning greeter at the Maryville Hy-Vee supermarket, was honored Sunday during a Beatles tribute concert staged as a fundraiser for Northwest Missouri Enterprise Facilitation.
The non-profit group provides free counseling and support for entrepreneurs and small business owners in Atchison, Holt, Nodaway, Andrew, Gentry and Worth counties.
During a break in the show, NWMEF Fundraising Events Coordinator Marilyn Alldredge presented Mares with a plaque of appreciation for his involvement with the organization, which has included appearances at similar events over the past five years.
"Fred has been of utmost help with providing resources, time, talents, public relations and much support over the years," Alldredge said. "He is always willing to share his musical talents or his story-telling and jokes. He is such a giving and loving person of goodwill."
Northwest Missouri Enterprise Facilitation's next major event will be the 4th annual Great Northwest Wine Fest October 5 in Mound City.
