An outbuilding along Route EE about six miles northeast of Maryville was destroyed by fire Tuesday night.
Phil Rickabaugh of Maryville Public Safety's fire division said 130 large bales of hay were destroyed in the blaze, which had engulfed the 40-by-40-foot wood-framed, metal-roofed structure by the time firefighters arrived at 7:30 p.m.
The hay, valued at more than $10,000, and building were on property owned by local farmer Kevin Stiens. Rickabaugh said the fire started when one of the bales came in contact with the hot exhaust pipe of a mechanical loader.
After the blaze caught hold, flames spread rapidly due to a brisk southerly wind, Rickabaugh said. Firefighters from MPS and rural departments based in Ravenwood and Pickering remained on the scene for about three hours.
The hay barn was completely destroyed. No injuries were reported.
