It's going to be a big weekend for families whose children attend two of Maryville's elementary schools, along with the general public.
Horace Mann Laboratory School and Eugene Field Elementary School have both scheduled upcoming carnival fundraisers. EFE's event is set for Saturday and Horace Mann's for Sunday.
Both school offices are selling discount advance tickets. There will also be tickets available at the events themselves.
Eugene Field has been celebrating its "Family Fun Fest" for a number of years, while Horace Mann is holding its "Together We Can Carnival" for the first time. Together We Can is the Horace Mann motto.
Saturday's events at Eugene Field start at noon and last until 4 p.m. Activities are to include games, inflatables and a raffle. The rain date is May 11.
Among the raffle prizes are electronic game systems, bicycles, a television and iPods.
Proceeds help the Eugene Field Parent-Teacher Organization fund student activities and purchase supplies and equipment.
Past PTO projects have included an outdoor electronic sign, a laptop/iPad cart, field trips and various student awards.
Eugene Field Principal Holly Brady said the primary focus of the event, besides fundraising, is to build connections with parents.
"It gives us a chance to socially interact with parents," Brady said. "We tell them all the time that they are their child's first teacher. But in building the home/school connection, we show that we can help support them, and how they can help us in teaching their children."
At Horace Mann, carnival funds will help support initiatives undertaken by the Parent Advisory Council.
"This is a great beginning for us," said Principal Jill Baker. "I hope, and think that the carnival will grow into a much larger set of activities and bring families together to benefit Horace Mann."
The "Together We Can Carnival" will feature a variety of games, activities and raffle prizes.
The carnival, which will last from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, will take place in the circle drive west of Everett Brown Education Hall on the Northwest Missouri State University campus.
In the event of bad weather, the event will move inside to the gymnasium.
Guests will include Bobby Bearcat and Northwest soccer and basketball athletes, who will be available for photos.
Tickets will be good for food and games, so families will need no cash after tickets are purchased.
Parents can also purchase wristbands which serve as all-day passes to the bounce house.
Baker said the inaugural carnival should mean a lot to both the school and its families.
"Events like this pull the whole community together," Baker said. "It is a good way to showcase what Horace Mann does and how we value children."
