John Julius Strueby, 89, Stanberry, passed away April 9, 2013 at Pineview Manor, Stanberry, MO.
John was the oldest of 9 children born to Emil and Anna (Schwebach) Strueby on November 23, 1923. John attended St. Mary’s (Wildcat) School in his youth and served in the U.S. Army for two years during WWII.
He married Rita Teresa Ellerman at the Abbey Basillica in Conception, MO on August 26, 1947. To this marriage were born 4 children.
John was a lifetime resident of the Stanberry area, farming and raising cattle for many years. He worked for Lehr Construction in his younger years helping to build such buildings as K-Mart; and was a Maintenance Engineer for Sherwood Medical Industries until his retirement. Both were located in St. Joseph.
He was an active member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Stanberry, humbly accepting any job that was requested of him. And for his efforts he received the Bishop’s Award for “outstanding visible contribution to the life and work of the church”. He is especially remembered for the large Nativity Scene that he and Rita so lovingly mad and restored. John was a member of the Tri-C American Legion Post # 464 for 59 years. John loved to play cards and was an avid Pitch player to his last days.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Sylvester; a sister, Mary Ann McGary, 3 brothers-in-law; Bill Schnieder, Edmond McGary and Gene Wiederholt.
Survivors include his wife, Rita; 2 daughters, Bobbi (Glenn) Holstine of Wheatland, MO, and Joyce (Ron) Harding of Olathe, KS; 2 sons, Jim (Nancy) Streuby of Darlington, MO and Joe (Barb) Strueby of Lenexa, KS; 3 grandchildren, Quentin (Kristen) Strueby of Fairfax, MO, Robyn (B.J.) Marshall of Knoxville, KY and Jeremy Harding of Olathe, KS; 2 great grandsons, Ian Marshall and Grayson Strueby; 2 brothers, Ed (JoAnn) Strueby of Lamarque, TX and Tom (Kay) Strueby of Conception Junction, MO; 4 sisters, Cecilia (Bill) Schnieder of Leavenworth, KS, Theresa (Gene) Wiederholt of Stanberry, MO, Rita (Carl) Biastock of Joplin, MO, and Dorothy (Ben) Kohlleppel of Parnell, MO; 1 sister-in-law, Madonna (Sylvester) Strueby of Guilford, MO; and many nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 12, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Stanberry, MO. Burial in St. Columba Cemetery, Conception Junction, MO. A Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. Thursday followed by visitation until 8:00 at the Roberson Funeral Home, Stanberry, MO, where friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Thursday.
