Northwest Missouri State University has announced that Stuart Brand of Birmingham (England) City University will address graduates during spring commencement exercises Saturday, May 4.
Brand serves as director of learning experience at BCU, which is the largest undergraduate higher education institution in the West Midlands, a metropolitan county in west central England with a population of nearly 3 million.
"We are so pleased to have Dr. Brand joining us for our spring commencement ceremonies," said Northwest President John Jasinski.
"Through our interactions with Birmingham City University and collaboration on student engagement activities, Stuart and his team have become valued partners, and we look forward to hearing the words of advice he has for our graduates as they embark on a new chapter."
The day will include two ceremonies, one at 10 a.m. for graduates of the Melvin D. and Valorie G. Booth College of Business and Professional Studies and one at 2 p.m. for graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Education and Human Services.
Brand and Birmingham City University began developing a relationship with Northwest in order to study the Missouri institution's student campus employment program, a relatively new concept in Great Britain.
In January 2010, Brand and two other BCU faculty members visited Maryville to observe Northwest's student worker initiative first hand. Over the past two years, the schools have continued to collaborate on how to address various campus employment issues.
More than 700 students are expected to receive Northwest diplomas this spring. About 550 will complete bachelor's degrees, while another 150 are to be awarded master's degrees, education specialist degrees and graduate school certifications.
Those unable to attend commencement can watch the ceremonies live at www.nwmissouri.edu/live. Graduation snapshots taken with mobile phones can be forwarded to firstname.lastname@example.org and will appear immediately on Northwest’s Flickr page at www.flickr.com/nwmostate.
Degree candidates can pick up caps and gowns at the Student Services Center on the first floor of the Administration Building from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 29, through Friday, May 3, or one hour prior to each ceremony on May 4.
