Returning from the MSHSAA District Tournament held at Liberty North High School on March 15-16, the Maryville Speech and Debate Squad qualified four students to State competition.
Jackson Ackman took first-place over-all in Poetry Interpretation and received a bid to attend the State Tournament. Jackson also won Quarter-Finalist honors for placing in the “top 8” in Lincoln Douglas Debate, where the “top 4” qualify to State.
Emily Meyers and Kendra Henggeler also advanced to State in Duet Acting. The duo placed third at Districts. Jonathan Rogers advanced to State in International Extemporaneous. The sophomore placed third at Districts. Students compete in two preliminary rounds, and then the top seven competitors advance to a final round. In the final round, they must place in the “top 3” to advance to State competition.
Mason Dredge advanced to the final round in Prose Interpretation where he finished fifth, but not receive a bid. Emily Meyers advanced to the final round in Storytelling where she finished seventh.
Other students participating in the District Tournament included: Anna Bagoly, Dramatic; Emily Meyers, Humorous; Kendra Henggeler, Radio Speaking; Sarah Henggeler, U.S. Extemp; and Jackson Ackman, Oratory.
The MSHSAA State Tournament will be held April 19-20 on the University of Missouri campus in Columbia.
