The Northwest Missouri State softball team did not have their home opener go as planned Tuesday as they dropped both games of a double-header to Missouri Western losing 2-1 in game one and 6-4 in game two.
Jenna Creger pitched in her second consecutive extra inning ball game and was handed a complete game loss. Creger went 8.0 innings collecting seven strikeouts and giving up only one earned run to move her record to 6-3 on the season.
The Griffons struck first scoring in the top of the second inning with a solo home run. The Bearcats tied in up in the bottom of the fourth when Kristen Uthe hit an RBI single to right field that scored Stephanie Price.
Both teams struggled to get runners in scoring position in the later innings until the eight when Missouri Western singled in the go ahead run. Jordan Ereth reached on a single in the bottom half but the Bearcats could not knock her in and fell to the Griffons 2-1 in eight innings.
Northwest was able to get on the scoreboard first in game two with a two-run third inning. Candace Miller hit a triple to right center field that scored Ereth to go up 1-0. Hailee Hendricks followed with a sacrifice fly to left to get Miller across the plate for the second run of the inning.
Missouri Western tied it up at 2-2 in the fourth and added one more run in the fifth to take a lead 3-2. Miller led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and would later score when Price was caught in a run down after hitting a single to right tying the game 3-3.
The Griffons fought back to add two runs in the sixth which proved to be enough for the victory.
The Bearcats moved across a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Kylie Cantrell smashed her second home run of the season over the left center field wall to bring her team within one, down 5-4.
Missouri Western was able to get an insurance run in the seventh and Northwest could not pull out the last inning comeback and dropped game two 6-4.
Paige Blythe was tagged with her second loss of the season. Abbie Vitosh got the start for the Bearcats but did not get the decision.
Northwest moves to 13-7 on the season and 3-3 in MIAA play. Head Coach Ryan Anderson's team will head to St. Joseph this weekend for the Missouri Western Crossover.
