A pair of late rallies fell short Tuesday as the Northwest Missouri State baseball team fell to Missouri Western 10-4 and 7-2 in a MIAA double-header at Bearcat Field.
The Bearcats fell to 6-16 on the season and 4-12 in league play while the Griffons stayed perfect in the MIAA at 12-0. Missouri Western also saw its winning streak run to 16 straight and improved to 17-3 overall.
Game saw the Griffons jump out early scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. A triple followed by a two-run homer gave Missouri Western a 2-0 lead and was followed by another two-run bomb putting the Bearcats behind early.
Missouri Western added another RBI single in the second and again in the third and when the dust finally cleared the Bearcats faced a 7-0 deficit.
After scratching a run across in the bottom of the third inning on a solo homer from Steven Garber, the Bearcats plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth. However, Northwest left the bases loaded and could not recover as the Griffon bullpen held the Bearcats scoreless in the final 2.1 innings.
Blane Reutter picked up his third loss of the season while Rob Henrichs pitched 4.0 innings of solid relief.
Tyler Barth also worked out of the bullpen for the final 1.2 innings allowing only one walk and two strikeouts.
In game two, Northwest got six solid innings from Austin Warren however a lethal fourth inning doomed the Bearcats when Missouri Western scored five runs on six hits. The junior scattered 12 hits over 6.0 innings of work, striking out eight and only walking one.
The Griffons picked up an early run in the top of the first, but the Bearcats answered in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly from Derek Meyer that plated Garber.
The Bearcats were not able to take advantage of miscues from the Griffons in game two, as Missouri Western left eight men on base and committed three errors.
Northwest threatened to rally in the bottom of the seventh when Garber led off the inning with a double.
Alex Singleton singled home Garber and moved to second on an error, but was left in scoring position when Ryan Abernathy flied out to end the inning.
The bullpen for Northwest was solid in game two as well going 3.0 innings and only allowing two hits.
Garber finished 2-for-4 and scored both the Bearcat runs as Northwest fell 7-2 in game two.
The Bearcats hit the road for their final MIAA series against the Truman Bulldogs Saturday. Northwest will open its three-game series with a double-header at 2 p.m. followed by a single game Sunday at noon.
