  • With spring break coming up March 23-31, Northwest Missouri State University is making its annual push to convince students to stay safe and make good choices as young people nationwide prepare to head for beaches, resorts and other vacation destinations.
University health officials and police officers, along with various student groups, are hosting a series of events in the coming days that will explore such topics as distracted driving, skin cancer prevention, suicide prevention and responsible alcohol consumption.
"Our hope is that students take away some tips and tricks that will help them have fun responsibly on their week away from classes," said Chris Triplett, a Northwest Wellness Services graduate assistant.
"It's important for students to act responsibly during spring break because they are still representing Northwest no matter if they are staying in Maryville or traveling to Cancun. It's always a good decision to think smart, play responsibly and above all make sure they are looking out for their safety and the safety of those around them."
Public events during the annual safety emphasis include the Delta Chi fraternity's fourth annual seminar on suicide prevention at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, in the J.W. Jones Student Union Ballroom.
Northwest Health educator Jennifer Kennymore will discuss suicidal tendencies to look for in friends and family members and talk about prevention strategies and mental health resources.
Members from two student organizations, GAMMA and To Write Love on Her Arms, will give presentations on responsible drinking and the impact suicide has on surviving family members and loved ones.
Also returning this year is the popular Bobbypalooza! hamburger feed and safety fair, scheduled from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Thursday, March 21, at the Memorial Bell Tower.
