'Savage Love' author to speak at Northwest

Dan Savage, sex columnist and host of the MTV talk show "Savage U," will speak at Northwest Missouri State University at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, in the J.W. Jones Student Union Ballroom.

Billed as "Savage Love Live," the presentation will feature relationship advice and Savage's views on sexuality, which he airs regularly in "Savage Love," a nationally syndicated advice column.

In addition to his work as a pundit, playwright and journalist, Savage is also the creator of the "It Gets Better" YouTube project, which seeks to raise awareness about bullying directed at young people who identify as members of the lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender community.

"Savage's mission is to promote healthy relationships among college students, and he brings up topics that students are not normally comfortable bringing up with their partners or friends," said Lindsey Steele of Northwest's Student Activities Council, which is sponsoring the event.

"In college, everyone is around relationships. Whether it's your roommate’s relationship or one you have with your significant other, you can take something from this lecture."

Openly gay, Savage frequently writes on such topics as homosexuality, pornography, infidelity and monogamy. At Northwest, he will respond to questions from the audience submitted anonymously on notecards.
