For the second straight year, the Lady Hound basketball team was one-and-done in the Class 3 District 16 Tournament.
A huge underdog this time, eighth-seeded Maryville lost to top-seeded Hamilton 49-24 in an opening round game Monday night at Grace Gymnasium.
Maryville finished the season at 6-19 overall, a seven win decrease from the year before. This was the Hounds' 12th loss in their last 13 games.
Hamilton improved to 21-2 and advanced to face either Bishop LeBlond or Lathrop in the semifinals.
The Hornets had the game well in hand by halftime, leading 34-11. They scored the first eight points of the second half to open up as much as a 31-point lead.
Maryville held Hamilton to just seven points the remainder of the game, but never came closer than 24.
The Lady Hounds were led in scoring by junior guard Chelsea Byland with 13 points. She scored 10 of Maryville's 13 in the second half. Gabby Church added four points.
Hamilton's Elsie Greenwood led all scorers with 16 points, scoring 13 of those in the first half. Molly Ward also reached double-figures with 11. All but one of the remaining points came from Morgan Prather (eight), Erin Finch (seven) and Shelby Cruz (six.).
This marked the final game in the careers of Maryville's three seniors—Baylee Scarbrough, Chelsea McMichael and Blair Twaddle.
