A quartet of Bearcat women earned a NCAA provisional mark to open weekend action at the 2013 Iowa State Classic.
The Northwest Missouri State women's distance medley team raced to a 13th place finish earning a provisional mark. Led by Taylor Woodruff, Ashton Nibert, Chloe Wichman and Anne Herbert the Bearcats checked in just one second under the mark with a time of 12:19.36.
Tyler Shaw also earned a provisional mark in the 200-meter dash – Shaw currently holds a top 15 time in the 60-meter dash. On Friday the senior raced to a time of 22.07 as he raced to a 10th place finish.
Shaw and Travis Manning also continued their solid indoor season as Manning earned a top 10 finish in the 60-meter hurdles. Manning's time of 8.18 was good for an eighth place finish while Shaw was just outside the top 10 at 11th with a time of 8.22.
For the Bearcat women Jordan Esry narrowly missed a provisional mark with a time of 10:12.79. The time was a personal best for Esry in the 3000-meters and captured the third best time in the Northwest record books.
SEWARD, Neb. – Porter Groves and Eli Smith highlighted the day at the Concordia Classic Friday for the Northwest Missouri State track and field teams.
For Groves it was his performance in the triple jump that earned him a NCAA provisional mark and the second best indoor jump of his career. Groves finished with a mark of 47-7.25 which ranks him in the top 20 in the nation and is the third best distance in the MIAA.
Also for the Bearcat men, Eli Smith captured the 400-meter dash title with a time of 49.73. Smith is one of six Northwest men to have earned NCAA provisional times this season with his time at the Cyclone Holiday Preview in December.
Desmond Jackson and Groves also raced to top 15 finishes in the 60-meter dash. Jackson with a time of 7.14 and Groves' time of 7.16 missed the provisional mark of 6.90.
On the women's side Samantha Fender raced to a fourth place finish in the 60-meter dash. Fender narrowly missed the provisional time (7.78) as her finals time of 7.95 earned her the top five finish.
Emilee Messer also raced to a top five finish in the 800-meters with a time of 2:22.91.
The Bearcat women also saw Selina Kendall miss a provisional mark by inches as her jump of 4-11.75 gave her a 13th place finish in a crowded high jump field.
