Hounds subdued by LeBlond in road loss

Maryville and Bishop LeBlond spent most of the first three quarters Tuesday night making runs at one another.

The fourth quarter belonged all to LeBlond.

The Golden Eagles scored the first eight points to built a double-digit lead, and the Hounds never got closer than nine from then on in a 48-35 loss at Grace Gymnasium.

Maryville was outscored 20-9 in the fourth period, its most points allowed in a quarter all game.

Ahead throughout the second half after falling behind 10-0, LeBlond avenged a 53-52 loss to Maryville exactly a week prior at the Cameron Tournament.

Maryville fell to 14-6 overall and 1-2 in the MEC in its last of eight consecutive games away from home.

The Hounds' 35-point total was a new-season low. They hit only two three-pointers—both late in the fourth quarter—and were 4-9 at the foul line.

All of the Hounds scoring was done by their starting five.

Maryville was led by Jonathan Baker with nine points. Treyton Burch had eight followed by Tyler Kenkel (seven), Trent Nally (six) and Ty Hilsabeck (five).

LeBlond's Jacob Madden led all scorers with 14 points. Six of those came on buzzer-beating three's at the end of first and second quarters.

The latter one gave LeBlond a 19-16 halftime lead it never relinquished.

Grant Gillaspie totaled nine points. Connor Haynes had eight and Derek Gallagher posted seven.

For most of the first quarter, this looked like a game the Hounds were going to run away with.

They scored the opening 10 points and held LeBlond scoreless for over seven minutes.

That's when the trading of runs began.

The Eagles scored their first five points in the last 37 seconds of the quarter, then made the opening basket of the second quarter to cut Maryville's lead to 10-7.

The Hounds fired back with the next six points to spread their lead to 16-7, but were held scoreless the rest of the half.

LeBlond capitalized on the drought with a run of 12 straight points, concluding with Madden's second buzzer-beating three to take a three-point lead.

The run extended into the third quarter with a three from Gallagher to make it 22-16.

Maryville's deficit reached 28-21, but a strong close to the quarter fueled by their pressure defense brought the Hounds within two.

The momentum failed to carry-over into the fourth quarter.

LeBlond scored the first four baskets, two by Haynes, to lead 36-26.

Three's by Baker and Burch cut the gap to nine, but after each one, LeBlond broke Maryville's press and ended up with a layup.

The Hounds got it to nine once more before the Eagles scored the final four points.

Maryville returns home Friday to play Smithville at 7 p.m.

It's the Hounds first home appearance since Jan. 8.
