• Hounds split duals with Benton, St. Pius X

  • Maryville's wrestling team went 1-1 at Tuesday's Benton Triangular, leaving head coach Joe Drake one win shy of 400 for his career.
    The Hounds started off with a 48-24 win over St. Pius X and followed it with a 54-30 loss to Benton.
    All of the matches in the St. Pius X dual were decided either by pin or forfeit, most going Maryville's way.
    Maryville collected five pins and three forfeit victories. The Hounds were pinned only twice and gave up their remaining 12 points on opens at 106 and 132.
    Nate Alexander (126 pounds), Ben Wilmes (138 pounds), Derek Stiens (145 pounds), Dane Hull (152 pounds) and Trevor Zimmerman (160 pounds) all won by pin. The first four of those ended their match in the first period. Zimmerman recorded his fall in the second period.
    Winners by forfeit were Jacob Partridge (113 pounds), Cody Jackson (195 pounds) and Brendan Weybrew (285 pounds).
    Dustyn Wilmes (120 pounds) and Brady Heitman (170 pounds) each got pinned.
    Maryville was open at six weight classes against Benton, issuing the Cardinals 36 free points. Benton only gave six back at 132 pounds.
    The Hounds went 5-3 in the matches that were contested.
    Alexander (126 pounds) and Weybrew (285 pounds) each produced first period pins. Stiens (145 pounds) and Hull (152 pounds) recorded second period falls. Ben Wilmes won by forfeit at 132 pounds.
    Partridge (106 pounds), Dustyn Wilmes (120 pounds) and Kale Heflin (138 pins) were fall victims.
    The Hounds wrestle three more duals Thursday against Mt. Ayr, Bedford and Pleasantville in Mt. Ayr.
    They return home Saturday for the Quad States Tournament at 10 a.m.
