After forging a six-point lead early in the fourth quarter, the Lady Hound basketball team gave it up quickly and wound up losing to Clarinda 41-36 Thursday night.
The game was knotted at 36 before Clarinda scored the final five points, all on free throws by Jenny Bear.
Her first free throw of that sequence put Clarinda ahead 37-36.
Baylee Scarbrough had a chance to tie it or give Maryville the lead, but missed the front end of a one-and-one. The Hounds retained possession on the rebound but Blair Twaddle was whistled for a double dribble on a drive to the basket.
Two more Bear free throws with 28.6 seconds left put Clarinda up three.
Twaddle attempted a game-tying three on Maryville's next trip that went off the side of the backboard.
Bear iced the game by sinking another pair of free throws with 13.6 seconds to play.
She finished with a game-high 16 points, hitting 8-10 free throws overall and 7-8 in the fourth quarter.
As a team, Clarinda made 17-23 free throws and the Hounds were 2-4.
Maryville fell to 5-9 on the year, losing its second straight game.
The Hounds were led in scoring by sophomore Ann Coleman and senior Blair Twaddle, each with 12 points.
Coleman had eight of her points in the first half and Twaddle scored eight second half points, with a pair of third quarter three's.
Chelsea Byland added six second half points.
Clarinda's other top scorer was sophomore Kayla Rodgers with eight points. She had all of those in the fourth quarter.
Neither team held more than a three-point lead until the third quarter.
The score was tied at 6 at the end of the first quarter and 14 at the half.
Maryville opened up the first two possession lead on a three by Twaddle to make it 21-17.
Clarinda answered with four straight points to tie it at 21.
Twaddle hit another three just before the end of the quarter to give Maryville a 26-22 lead.
Byland scored on a runner to make it 28-22 early in the fourth.
Clarinda ran off the next eight points, four apiece by Abigail Brown and Rodgers to take a 30-28 lead.
Maryville tied it at 30 and went ahead by one on a Twaddle jumper.
Rodgers completed a three-point play to put Clarinda back ahead 34-32.
The Hounds tied up it 34 and 36, but never again held the lead.
Maryville's next game is tonight at Bishop LeBlond.
