• Jefferson boys suffer overtime loss in tourney finals

  • After an upset of Albany in the semifinals, Jefferson's boys lost an overtime thriller to host Stanberry 50-48 Saturday in the first place game of the Stanberry Tournament.
    The Bulldogs outscored Jefferson in the extra session 7-5.
    Jefferson forced overtime after being down three at the start of the fourth quarter. Stanberry's lead was two at the half.
    The Bulldogs were led by Ryan Jensen and Daniel Hailey with 11 points apiece. Jefferson's Zach Jermain led all scorers with 14 points and made two three-pointers. Kyler Farnan scored 12 points and Blake Meyer had 11.
    The third-seeded Eagles reached the finals with a 66-56 win over second-seeded Albany.
    Jefferson had lost to Albany previously this year.
    The Eagles finished the first quarter down by eight, but outscored Albany 40-22 over the next two quarters to open up a 10-point lead that stood through the fourth.
    Meyer scored a career-high 28 points to lead all scorers. Jermain tossed in 17 points and hit two of the team's five three's.
    Tyler Lupfer (16 points), Drew Cottrill (12 points) and Rudy Sagun (10 points) were all in double-figures for Albany.
    Girls
    Jefferson recovered from shaky start offensively and a six-point halftime deficit to rally for a 48-42 win over King City in the third place game of the Stanberry Tournament Friday.
    Held to three first quarter points, the Eagles averaged 15 over the final three quarters.
    They went in front of King City in the third quarter by two points and put the Wildkats away late in the fourth.
    Jefferson's Shanna Welch led all scorers with a season-high 24 points. Sarah Kemper gave the Eagles an additional 10 points and hit a three.
    Hannah Wood was King City's lone double-figure scorer with 12 points.
    The Lady Eagles lost in the semifinals to eventual tournament champion North Andrew 46-35 Thursday night.
    It was the Eagles second loss to North Andrew this year, the other coming in the PVC Tournament finals at Bearcat Arena.
    North Andrew finished the opening quarter 12-11 and gradually built its lead up to double-digits. The Eagles were held to nine points or fewer in each of the final three quarters.
    Welch led all scorers with 17 points. Danielle Chambers was North Andrew's high scorer with 12.
