NTS adult courses focus on crafts, skills

Several new classes will begin this spring through Northwest Technical School's Adult and Community Education program.

Collision Repair-Restoration is a five-week course that covers welding, fabricating, straightening and refinishing techniques. Equipment and materials are provided with tuition.

The sessions are Monday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning April 8. Cost is $150, and the instructor is Ron Wiederholt.

Another new class covers intermediate iPad operations. Topics covered for the $19 tuition include printing, photography and videos.

The single-session course will take place Feb. 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. and is taught by Phyllis Adams.

Preserving Your Garden Treasures ($15) is another one-session class. It will be offered Jan. 31 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Kelli Wilmes, a registered dietician with Nodaway County Extension will teach food preservation techniques, including canning, freezing and drying.

Connie Neal will teach Simple and Inexpensive Home Energy Saving ($15) on Feb. 7 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. This class offer tips on lowering utility costs through the use of energy-efficient products and energy audits.

Neal will also teach Healthy Homes ($15), a one-session course on March 7 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Students will learn how to deal with such household problems as mold, allergens, asthma triggers, pesticides, radon and VOCs.

They'll also study the importance of using non-toxic cleaning products and how to integrate pest management techniques.

A composting class ($15) will be taught by horticulturist Tom Fowler and Jim Crawford, a natural resource engineer. The two men will cover the basics of how homeowners can get started composting, how to construct a compost bin and various uses of compost.

Quest for 850: Discover the Secrets to a Higher Credit Score will be taught by Rebecca Travnichek. This four-session class begins April 8 at 6:30 p.m.

Jason Jenkins is the instructor for Responsible Fur Trapping. The two-hour class will be offered twice: from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 22 and 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 24. Cost is $5.

Students will learn about wildlife management, how to trap humanely, how to make successful trap sets, fur care and presentation.

Grow Bigger and Better Veggies, Flowers and Crops is being instructed by Leon McIntyre. The three-session course costs $30 and runs from 7 to 9 p.m. beginning March 5.

This is an introduction to essential plant nutrients and fertilizers and also covers soil ph and micronutrients. All levels of gardeners are welcome.

A soldering workshop ($65) will take place from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday, March 9. The one-session class taught by Bill Scott will teach students how to use hard solder to fuse metals. Participants will also learn basic metal-working skills. Beginners and experienced metal workers are welcome.
