Hounds wrestlers finish fifth at Mid-Buchanan

With four individuals finishing fourth or higher, Maryville's wrestling team took fifth out of 12 teams Saturday at the Mid-Buchanan Tournament in Faucett.

Maryville's lone finalist was sophomore heavyweight Brendan Weybrew. In the 285 pound title match, he absorbed his first loss of the season to Mid-Buchanan's No. 2 ranked Coleman Lawson on a second period pin.

Sophomore Nate Alexander pinned Centralia's Nate Phillips in the third period to earn a third place finish at 126 pounds.

Maryville senior Derek Stiens lost his third place match at 145 pounds to Lafayette County's Conner Lamphier because of an injury default.

At 152 pounds, Hound sophomore Dane Hull lost a 5-3 decision to South Harrison's Trey Lathrum in the third place match.

Maryville returns to dual action Tuesday against Rock Port and Albany.

Thursday's Results

In its opening MEC duals of the season, Maryville's wrestling team went 1-2 at the Cameron Quadrangular Thursday night.

Maryville lost to Cameron 64-15, then to Lafayette 42-36 before closing out the night with a 42-39 win over Savannah.

The results moved Maryville's dual record to 3-4 on the year.

Maryville's Class 1 No. 3-ranked heavyweight Brendan Weybrew pinned all three of his opponents to finish 3-0. Ryan James also went 3-0, winning two matches by forfeit and one pin.

Jacob Partridge (106 pounds), Ben Wilmes (132 pounds), Dane Hull (152 pounds) and Trevor Zimmerman (160 pounds) each went 2-1. Dustin Wilmes (120 pounds) and Class 1 No. 6 Derek Stiens (145 pounds) were 1-2. Kale Heflin (138 pounds) and Colby Jackson (182 pounds) finished 0-3.

Weybrew, James and Hull recorded Maryville's only match wins in the dual against Cameron. James pinned Brandon Foster in 57 seconds. Weybrew pinned Brady Gunn 51 second into the second period. Hull took a major decision over Dustyn Dawson 7-5.

Cameron picked up five pins and four forfeit victories. At 145 pounds, Ryan Burkhart scored an 11-1 major decision over Stiens.

Maryville wrestled seven matches against Lafayette, winning three by pin and losing the other four by pin.

Both teams had four open weight classes.

At 106, Partridge pinned Sno Powell in 3:26. Ben Wilmes required just 16 seconds to pin Jacob Proctor at 132.

In a battle of No. 3-ranked heavyweights, Weybrew pinned Spencer Riddle in exactly one minute.

James, Hull and Zimmerman all won by forfeit.

Maryville gave up an additional weight class to Savannah, but overcame it with a 3-1 edge in pins.

Weybrew pinned Dylan Richardson in 37 seconds. Stiens put Dylan Hogue on his back in the third period.

Dustin Wilmes recorded a first period pin against Nathan Hogue.

Heflin avoided being pinned at 138 pounds, losing an 11-6 decision to Levi Davidson. This saved the Hounds three points that turned out to be the difference.

Partridge, James, Ben Wilmes and Zimmerman all won by forfeit.
