Students sought for summer math, science program

High school-age applicants are still being sought for Northwest Missouri State University’s Upward Bound Math and Science program, a summer learning experience for eligible young people in grades 9-11 set for Saturday, June 8, through Saturday, July 20.

The postmarked application deadline is Thursday, Feb. 14. Downloadable application forms are available at www.nwmissouri.edu/dept/ubms.

Project Counselor Linda Davison advised students seeking to attend the session to carefully consider the application's short essay questions before mailing it in.

The program targets students who are from low-income families, are potentially the first member of their family to attend college, or both.

Acceptance can lead to possible participation in the "Bridge" college preparedness program, which amounts to a $2,400 scholarship.

Students from the following northwest Missouri school districts are eligible to participate: North Nodaway R-VI High School (Hopkins); North Andrew R-VI High School (Rosendale); Worth County R-III High School (Grant City); Benton, Central and Lafayette high schools in St. Joseph.

Eligible Iowa schools include Bedford High School; Clarinda High School; Nishnabotna High School (Farragut/Hamburg); Red Oak High School; Shenandoah High School; South Page High School (College Springs); Villisca High School and Corning High School.

Also included are Lincoln College Preparatory Academy and Northeast High School in Kansas City; Falls City and Nebraska City high schools in Nebraska; and Turner High School in Kansas.

All student expenses are covered during the six-week camp, including round-trip mileage and weekend field trips, which have previously included Mozingo Lake as well as such Kansas City attractions as Worlds of Fun, Science City, the New Theatre Restaurant and Royals baseball games.

Funded through the U.S. Department of Education, the UBMS program at Northwest has served young people with an accelerated math and science program since 1992.

"Students go back to their home high schools with greater motivation, confidence, self-esteem, excitement and a direction for their lives," Davison said.
